BIO

Bold. Unassuming. Adventurous. Slightly fruity. These are all words Nick Thayer likes to use when pretending he knows about wine, and he has had plenty of chance to practice recently, with plenty to celebrate, but let's start from the top.

Nick Thayer spent his childhood making strange noises out of strange things, and spending all his money on guitars and questionable records. It wasn't long until he realized that it would take more than a job in a coffee house to complete his Queen collection so he decided to make music pay for itself. After a number of years in various pretentious funk-rock bands with various pretentious names Nick had the misfortune to end up DJing at a mate's party. “I borrowed some turntables in the morning, figured out how to use them in the afternoon, and DJed that night”, he recalls. Thayer soon discovered that records and turntables were easier to deal with than drummers and singers, and so decided to give the DJing thing a shot.

With an ear for things out of the ordinary Thayer soon found himself resident at one of Melbourne 's longest running breaks nights ‘Out of Order'. With a weekly captive audience and a computer that seemed to work better whilst you kicked it, Thayer started ordering the beeping noises he was making into things resembling songs. It wasn't long before he was inflicting these assortments of sounds onto dancefloors on a weekly basis, using them as testing grounds for tunes as they evolved. Deciding that this was the way forward Thayer started sending this stuff to labels all over the place. On the advice of interstate drinking buddy and fellow producer Bass Kleph he sent his music to Breaking Point. They said they liked it, but that was it. He sent them some more. They liked that also, but that was it. Eventually as time wore down, so did their resistance, and they signed him up. His debut ‘Theme One' found its way onto decks the world over and the ball was now beginning to gather some momentum. Before long the tune found its way onto the Ministry Compilation ‘Breaks 03', and a host of other releases to boot.

Whilst all this was going on, Nick continued to work on his DJing too, and started getting booked all over the country. Sydney , Brisbane , Canberra , Byron, and even Wollongong all found themselves wondering why this lanky idiot was invading their clubs and jumping around like a loony. He played the Boiler Room at Big Day Out, Melbourne metro alongside The Crystal Method, and had the Stanton Warriors shaking what their mothers gave them at an eventful New Years Eve show. Things evolve and for one reason and another, the ship that was Out of Order was berthed permanently, but there were new prospects on the horizon. Residencies at two of Melbourne 's foremost clubs soon followed, with Melbourne stalwart Ransom inviting Thayer to join the line-up at Revolver's The Late Show, and The Croft Institute enlisting the size of his funk collection for Lesson One.

In November 2004 Thayer decided to make the trek back to his homeland to see what the fuss was like over there, playing some massive shows at Supercharged in Brighton, Blowpop in Bristol at the request of John Stapleton and Soulberries in London . Returning to Australia with renewed enthusiasm Thayer and Bass Kleph decided to come up with an excuse for more frequent interstate drinking sessions and starting writing together. The results were the massive ‘Fuckin the Groove' and ‘Ante Up', not to mention an unstoppable remix of the Drumattic Twins ‘Feelin Kinda Strange' for UK mob leaders Finger Lickin. All three of these records are still on the turntables of the likes of Plump DJs, Soul of Man (who played two of them as part of their four track set on the UK 's Radio One Glastonbury broadcast), Meat Katie, General Midi, and just about every other breaks act worth mentioning. ‘Ante Up' was on ‘Breaks 04', and the Drumattics remix is already on the Friendly ‘Chew the Fat' CD with more to come shortly. Expect more music from the pair as they liquidate their assets.

Back in Melbourne and Thayer joined the team at Triple RRR radio, hosting ‘Beats Electric', a weekly show, mirroring his musical tastes and incorporating anything electronic or beat related. Within six months he has had guests such as The Streets, Prodigy, Arrested Development, RJD2, Plump DJs, DJ Format, Boca45, Katalyst, d.i.g., not to mention offering plenty of emerging local talent the opportunity to get some exposure.

On the back of all this, Nick is collecting more frequent flyer miles than a migrating swan, headlining shows up and down the country, and frequently being flown around by Sydney ringleaders Fuzzy, playing for them alongside the likes of Krafty Kuts, not to mention the rest of his burgeoning national schedule. He recently remixed the monster ‘Purple Funky Monkey' for the Australian release of the JDS album, and his next release ‘Clap Ya Hands' has already had the hippest of hips swinging, turning up on the Mercedes Australian Fashion Week CD. More recently the supremely fashionable Stanton Warriors commissioned his talents to remix 'Still Here' for their Punks label. He has asked to be paid in shoes.

Not content with all that, Nick took up an offer from Melbourne institution Honkytonks to host a night. Called ‘Pick Up the Pieces', it is already garnering a reputation for igniting glowstick dancing in even the most sedate DJs, and as for the party people, well some things are better left unsaid.

With a full length album in the works, another UK tour planned including playing the infamous Eargasm @ Fabric at the personal request of the Plump DJs, the finishing touches being applied to some more high profile remixes, and a whole swag of new releases to follow, Nick Thayer can look forward to plenty more reasons to practice his wine tasting technique, and a good reason to lay down a few more cases…

"Nick Thayer- the only DJ in the world who's taken me to the ballet." - General Midi

"From shades of rhythm in the 90's to Drumattic Twins in the 21st century we have had a whole heap of remixes of our work over the last 15 years. The Outstanding Nick Thayer & Bass Kleph remix of "Feelin Kinda Strange" is by far the best Remix anyone has ever done for us!" - Nick Slater (Drummatic Twins)

"Nick Thayer : Keeps it tight, lets it groove and smacks it up - one of only a few dj's who can program a set without playing badly produced tearout, speeded up big beat, cheese or prog nonsense. " - Dominic B (Stanton Warriors)

"Nick Thayer is totally awesome - like truly! Believe!" - DJ Awesome

"Nick Thayer ... came on after me and ripped out an amazing selection of funky breaks tunes, most of which were his own productions and remixes. I was begging him for copies by the end of the night." A Skillz in iDJ magazine.

"Nick Thayer is an awesome DJ and producer, keeping the party funk vibe rocking and fresh with his own particular take on breaks. With some big name remixes under his belt, and huge party starters of his own igniting floors world wide, he's operating very comfortably on an international level. Nick Thayer, along with Bass Kleph, are at the very top of the production game in Australia , undoubtably my fave Australian breaks producers. " - Friendly (Fat! Records)

"for the dopeist hip hop beats in the breaks check out my main man Nick Thayer ,it's ghetto baby." Deekline
